The Mount of Beatitudes

In week 6 of our Holy Land tour, we visit The Mount of Beatitudes.

Ancient tradition singles out a hill on the northwest corner of the Sea of Galilee as the place where Jesus delivered the Sermon (6.1) some 2000 years ago.

Today this site includes a small church (1938) surrounded by gardens and bowers. The building’s eight sides represent the eight beatitudes.  Before us stretches the lake.  Bringing in their nightly catch, the Jewish fishermen saw Roman power all around them: Hippos, Gadera and Tiberias – we can locate them from here – each then “a city on a hill.” But Jesus’ teachings on this mountain offered the disciples a new kind of community, capable of thriving regardless of what Rome did. Walking down to the lake, we take the path (flowered in winter) that Jesus and the twelve would have used between Chorazin and Capernaum.
