Capernaum

In week 1 of our Holy Land tour, we visit Capernaum. It is here, a simple fishing village on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, that we get a feeling of Jesus’ presence more than anywhere else(1.1)

Visit the local synagogue where Jesus healed and preached. The dominating limestone structure that exists today, replaced the original basalt stones in the late 4th century. Sit on the stone benches, and you may hear Jesus name himself “the bread of life” (1.2). View the stone carvings from the synagogue’s decor, including the ancient symbol of Judaism: a menorah (seven branched candelabrum) girded by an incense shovel and a shofar (a ram’s horn used as a trumpet). Inspect the mysterious representation of a pillared building on wheels. Imagine farmers turning the large millstones to grind grain (1.3).

Stroll over to the house of Peter, whose mother-in-law he healed (1.4).
Stand beneath what was once a thatched roof and imagine the four men
lowering the paralytic through a hole (1.5).

1.1. reading Matthew 9:1-2 with Mark 2:1-12
1.2. John 6:35, 59
1.3 Luke 17:35, “Two will be grinding grain…”
