Chorazin (Korazim)

In week 2 of our Holy Land tour, we visit Chorazin. About two miles up the hill from Capernaum stood Chorazin, famous for its wheat. Because Jesus did so much of his teaching in these two villages, as well as Bethsaida, the three are referred to as the “evangelical triangle.”

It is in Chorazin that Jesus performed most of his miracles, and where he cursed the residents for failing to repent (2.1). Wander in the village square, surrounded by the walls and arches of public buildings. Sit among the remains and recapture what it must have felt like to hear Jesus teach.

Nearby is the town’s synagogue (4th century AD), where the “seat of

Moses”, the Rabbi’s teaching podium, was found (2.2). Stand on the

synagogue steps, look down at the lake 900 feet below, and see how much more awaits excavation. Visit medieval houses to the west, overlooking a riverbed descending to the lake.  Return to the synagogue and head north to visit a beautiful Jewish ritual bath, roofed over with basalt slabs.

2.1. Matthew 11:20

2.2. Matthew 23:2
